Beauty Training Firm Defies The Downturn
A client of Weybridge-based accountancy firm Midgley Snelling is defying the downturn, with its training courses in beauty therapy proving a big success.
ISIS Beauty Academy, based in Walton-on-Thames, is particularly aimed at mature students who need a flexible course which can be fitted around existing work commitments.
The business was set up by Carolyne Cross, a therapist and trainer with 30 years’ experience in the industry, who was introduced to Midgley Snelling partner James Beecher for advice on tax and accounting issues in the initial planning stages.
James now produces the company’s year-end accounts and is also on hand all through the year to help with any questions or problems that crop up.
Principal Carolyne Cross said: “During our first year, we had over 200 students progress through our course and we turned a profit in our first period, which was very pleasing, particularly given the economic situation at the time”.
“It took about 18 months from the initial idea to launching the company as there were quite a few hoops to jump through, particularly as a training provider. I also needed someone to advise me on the financial side, and James Beecher at Midgley Snelling was recommended to me.
“I had been in the industry for 30 years, but I had no sort of background in running my own business. What I liked about James is he never patronised me, and really took the time to explain what he was doing and why. As a result I felt very comfortable talking to him about tax and accounting issues.
“Many of my students here will go on to run beauty salons and will need their own accountants – and I’ve been happy to recommend James in those circumstances.”
The academy offers various part-time day and evening courses on topics such as beauty therapy, massage, holistic therapies, manicure and nail techniques, as well as short courses in waxing, make-up, manicure and spray tan, plus refresher courses across all disciplines.
