Accountant Takes a Walk on the Wild Side
A partner at Weybridge-based chartered accountancy firm Midgley Snelling recently returned from a trip to East Africa where he was visiting a charity dedicated to wildlife conservation of which he is a trustee.
Robin Sewell is a trustee of the Elsa Conservation Trust, which operates ‘Elsamere’, a Field Study and Education Centre on the shores of Lake Naivasha in Kenya.
He and other trustees were making a special visit to Kenya to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the birth of founder Joy Adamson. Joy is principally known as the author of the Born Free books but as well as being a very talented artist, she and her husband were also passionate about conservation.
The charity was using the celebration of Joy’s birth as an opportunity to publicise its work in East Africa, particularly the lessons in conservation which are given to local schools.
As Robin is regularly in the country on business, a friend of his who was already involved in the charity asked him to join the board of trustees a few years ago.
Robin said: “As I’m in Kenya quite often, I have visited Elsamere a few times before but this was a good opportunity for all of the Trustees to get together and see what was happening there. Even though I have been a trustee for maybe 10 years, I am still very much the new boy as several of the trustees have been involved for much longer.
“It was also a chance for the people who work at Elsamere to meet the trustees in person as they don’t often get a chance to see them face to face. This trust has been running for 50 years now, quietly getting on with teaching the next generation about how important conservation is – not just to preserve the environment for wild animals but for us humans as well.”
